Can a power surge or an electrical failure cause your ps3 to be damaged?

I was just playing my ps3 slim when our power randomly cut off and the ps3 shut down along with everything in my house. I wouldn’t think it would hurt it because i think it would be ridiculous that Sony would make a product that could be damaged without any notice or anything you can do about it. Anything you guys know??? Any help is appreciated.

Power outage is not Sony’s fault. That would be an act of nature or God, depending on how you look at it.

But yeah, a power surge can ruin your PS3. I’ve had quite a few power outages, and nothing has been damaged.

    Yes. Very much so.

Sudden power outage during PS3 use can corrupt the hard drive and cause data to be lost. Its no different than an improper shutdown on a PC.

Power surges could damage some of the internal hardware if the PS3 is not connected to a proper surge protector.

Damage could also occur if there is inconsistent amounts of power coming from the outlet. This is where an expensive AC line conditioner comes in; it ensures that all your electronic devices are gettings its required power (thanks PoohBear).

All expensive electronics, including the PS3, need to be hooked up to a high quality surge protector, UPS battery backup, or line conditioner. A lot of PS3 owners aren’t aware of this because a lot of PS3 owners don’t own expensive Home Theater equipment, therefore, are unaware of the potential dangers.
